Summer issue
Since the sun is now shining at last, parliament is in recess and our columnist is on holiday, this month we present you with a rather shorter version of the New Values Newsletter than you are used to. In this modified summer edition the focus is on news from the organization itself. Because despite the “silly season”, New Values is running at full power. Activity is particularly intense on the NEA demonstration platform and at CertiChange. So it’s high time for an update.

Transactions during the NEA demonstration
Participation in the NEA demonstration is active and serious. This was already indicated by the large number of monitoring protocols submitted at the strongly attended New Values workshops devoted to the subject. And now this is confirmed by the many transactions now taking place on the trading platform specially created for the demonstration. Moreover, new transactions are also being concluded almost every day outside the specially organized trading sessions. So here’s the “half-time score” following the months of June and July:

• To date a total of 19 transactions have been included for NOx emission rights, with a total volume of 70,750 kg at an average price of Euro 1.33;
• 20 transactions have been concluded for CO2 emission rights, with a total volume of 61,000 kg at an average price of Euro 11.00.

Improvement of NEA demonstration trading platform
During the NEA demonstration New Values is maintaining intensive contact with all participants and other involved parties. This takes place in part through our Community – a place where everyone can share their opinions and ideas. During the first two months of the trial period this has led to a number of valuable suggestions which are helping us to improve the trading platform even more. Prompted by these ideas we have prepared a new version of the trading platform in close collaboration with our software developers.

The improved version of the trading platform is expected to become available to all participants on 16 August. When things have reached this point we will supply you with full information, via the Community, on the changes made. But we can already give you a sneak preview by listing a number of things that have been altered in response to your suggestions:

• from now on the overview of all orders will be automatically updated if new orders are entered;
  
• within the orders overview you will from now on be able to adjust the presentation of the orders to a format in which the price of the orders is the guiding principle. In addition you can also continue to use the current overview;
  
• in both versions of the orders overview you can from now on sort the orders by value in the column of your choice. This sorting can be by price, for instance, or by quantity, or by the period to which the emission rights refer, etc.;
  
• moreover, the orders overview will from now on show the prices of the 5 most recent completed transactions, thus giving you a direct insight into the current market price of the emission rights.
  

So as you see, we are always interested in your opinion and we really make use of it, too. In this way we aim to fully gear our trading platforms to the wishes of the ultimate users. CertiChange transactions
On Friday 30 July the hour had struck: the first official transactions were completed on CertiChange! Following almost 6 months of preparation and continual adjustment prompted by new (international) legislation, the first Certificates of Origin changed hands via CertiChange. Several large companies from the electricity sector took part in the trading session. Certificates based on various technologies (hydroelectric, biomass and wind) and both with and without energy tax were offered and requested in the order book. The platform fully handled transactions at the administrative, legal and financial levels, including payment and delivery of the certificates.

With these first successful transactions via CertiChange, New Values demonstrates that it can supply a full service platform that genuinely supports companies in the implementation of their environmental policies. Our goal is to realize a large trading volume at low cost and thus to make a real contribution to sustainable and cleaner energy consumption in Europe.
