Climex Energy Auction prepares REC auction for Dutch Government

Posted by Sascha Bloemhoff in General Interest

Climex Energy Auction started to prepare for the procedure to purchase guaranties of Origin for the Dutch Government. The Ministry of Defence will buy, on behalf of the entire National Government, Guarantees of Origin (GoOs), in order to compensate 75% of the total energy consumption of this National Government. In 2009, this total will rise to up to more than 80%. This way the Government’s aim drawn up several years ago, with regard to sustainability, will be met in particular concerning energy consumption.

The Dutch Government aims to have GoOs take up a share of 5 percent of the entire Dutch energy supply by 2010. In 2020 this percentage must have risen to 10. For
Electricity the numbers are different: it is the Government’s aim that 9 percent of the Electricity used in the Netherlands is generated as GoOs by 2010; for 2020 the aim is 17 percent. These goals have been based on international agreements like the Kyoto Protocol, drawn up in order to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide. The decision to gradually start using GoOs, 50 % in 2004 and 100% in 2012, means that National Government is way ahead on track to achieve these goals.

The total purchase for 2008 is an estimated 830 GWh of GoOs. For 2009, around 950 GWh will be required. The exact numbers and the division between the different kinds of GoOs (water, biomass and sun energy), is determined now. The winning supplier will book the GoOs into the CertiQ account of the Ministry of Defence, which will monitor further transactions by itself.
